In the News: Atlanta Business Chronicle Grants Ironwood the Healthiest Employer Award
On Feb. 18th 2016 at the Cobb Energy Centre, Wellness At Work was celebrated. The Atlanta Business Chronicle (ABC) honored companies in Atlanta that are leading the city when it comes to workplace health by making employee wellness a priority.
Employers were divided into three categories based on size. With right around 50 employees, Ironwood fell into the “small business” category, which included companies with anywhere between 2 and 99 employees. After a unique evaluation process, Ironwood was ranked fifth in their category and is thrilled by this achievement.
To determine the winners, The ABC partnered with the privately held technology firm, Healthiest Employers. Healthiest Employers measures corporate health data worldwide and has developed an online assessment to gauge wellness efforts and score employers on its Healthiest Employer Index. The award evaluates six categories: leadership commitment, foundational components, strategic planning, communication and marketing, programming and interventions, and reporting and analysis.
Ironwood’s wellness vendor is RivalHealth. They believe in the Rival philosophy, which is “no matter the condition the prescription is always the same… Move More and Eat Better!” To measure progress, employees take an initial “fit-in” to get their “Rival Rating.” The rating comes from the employee’s scores on four different exercises compared to the Cooper Institute norms for the corresponding age and gender. Employees are encouraged throughout the year to reach their goals based on their Rival Ratings and are awarded with amazon credits to purchase fitness equipment and discounts on their health insurance premiums.
Ironwood is an Atlanta based insurance and employee benefits brokerage and consulting firm that offers wellness consulting to its clients. Wellness and communications consultant, Tricia Brown, makes sure that her co-workers are following the plans she encourages Ironwood Clients to adopt.
Tricia enlists specialists to speak at Ironwood’s monthly Lunch and Learns, which cover topics from healthy eating and living practices to financial planning, essential oils and stress management. When asked about these topics, Tricia responded, “Most wellness programs don’t focus on total employee wellbeing. It is just as important to focus on stress and financial management, as it is fitness and nutrition.”
In addition to the monthly Lunch and Learns and weekly workouts, Ironwood employees are continually encouraged to make healthy decisions around the office. The Ironwood Wellness Committee regularly posts healthy living tips in the break room and arranges for a local farm to deliver fresh milk, eggs and produce.
Ironwood employees participate in the Ironwood Olympics each year for some “healthy competition” and the company has been the Gold Sponsor of the Trinity Combine event since its founding and even has employees who complete in this event for elite athletes
When asked how Ironwood has managed to be awarded the “Healthiest Employer” award for so many years now, Tricia replied “A wellness program is always a work in progress. Each year we build upon the last to make sure we are improving and continuing to push our employees to live healthier lives.”
